United States President Donald Trump rejected claims that his decision to strike Iran was influenced by Israel's plans to launch unilateral attacks.
The president added that rather than being pushed by Israel, the opposite may have happened. “ If anything, I may have forced Israel’s hand, but Israel was ready and we were ready ,” he said, noting that the operation had a “very powerful impact” and that Iran’s military capabilities had been severely hit. According to him, “almost everything they have has been neutralized” and the number of Iranian missiles “is dropping significantly.”
A day earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had suggested that the president decided to launch the attacks because the US believed Israel was on the verge of unilateral action against Iran.
The latest statements reflect differences in public interpretation of decision-making in Washington, at a time when tensions with Tehran remain high.
