Donald Trump criticized the United Kingdom and Spain during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in the Oval Office, when asked about the reaction of other allies of the United States.
He expressed particular dissatisfaction with London and Madrid, emphasizing the United Kingdom's agreement on the Chagos Islands.
"That island that you read about, the lease, for whatever reason, he leased the island, someone came and took it away," Trump said, referring to recent developments regarding the territory.
According to him, the issue has created logistical difficulties for the US.
"It took us three, four days to determine where we could land. It would have been much more convenient to land there compared to flying many extra hours," he said.
"So we're very surprised. We're not dealing with Winston Churchill," Trump added , a comment that was interpreted as criticism of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The Chagos Islands, officially known as the British Indian Ocean Territory, are located in the Indian Ocean and have been controlled by Britain since the early 19th century. London recently agreed to transfer sovereignty of the territory to Mauritius, while paying an average of 101 million pounds a year to rent a joint British-American military base on the largest island.
Although he had previously expressed support for this agreement, Trump has recently asked Prime Minister Starmer to cancel it.
