Trump & Pahlavi

United States President Donald Trump has downplayed the possibility that exiled Iranian activist Reza Pahlavi would take over Iran in the event of political changes in the country.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said his administration had not seriously considered the scenario. “Some people like it, but we haven’t really thought about it,” the US president said. “I think someone from within the country would probably be a better fit.”

Reza Pahlavi, the son of Iran's last shah, has positioned himself for years as one of the most popular Iranian opposition figures abroad and has called for political transition in Tehran.

However, Trump said that while Pahlavi "seems to be a very good person," he believes a candidate "who is out there and popular, if there is one," would be better suited to lead Iran.

The US president's statements come at a time of high tension between Washington and Tehran, while it remains unclear whether recent developments will lead to internal political changes in Iran.
