President Donald Trump convened his top national security team on Friday to discuss war with Iran, two US officials told Axios.

According to sources who have spoken directly to the president, Trump is seriously considering launching new attacks on Iran if negotiations do not bring a breakthrough at the last moment.

The meeting took place as the head of the Pakistani army, Field Marshal Asim Munir, traveled to Tehran in a last-ditch effort to bring the parties closer together and avoid a resumption of war.

Trump is seriously considering launching new attacks on Iran if last-minute progress is not made in negotiations, according to sources who have spoken directly to the president.

Parallel developments

Trump's meeting on Iran took place at the same time that Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, traveled to Tehran in an apparent last-minute effort to narrow differences and prevent a resumption of war.

A delegation from Qatar also arrived in Tehran on Friday to support mediation efforts.

Munir is expected to meet on Saturday with General Ahmad Vahidi, the commander of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and a key figure in the Iranian decision-making process.

A US official briefed on the diplomatic efforts described the negotiations as “extremely difficult.” He said drafts “come and go every day,” but without much progress.

What happened at the meeting?

According to sources, the meeting was attended by Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and other officials, along with Trump.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Caine, did not attend, as they were in Europe and at the Naval Academy graduation ceremony, respectively.

During the meeting, Trump was briefed on the state of negotiations and on different scenarios in case the talks fail.

Details that add to the suspicions and the backstory

A few hours after the meeting, the White House announced a change to Trump's schedule for the weekend.

After a scheduled speech in New York on Friday evening, he will return to Washington, rather than staying at his golf club in Bedminster.

Trump also wrote on the Truth Social network that he will not attend Donald Trump Jr.'s wedding this weekend due to "circumstances related to government and my love for the United States of America."

"I think it is important to remain in Washington, DC, at the White House during this important period," he wrote.

A source close to Trump and another familiar with the situation told Axios that the president has become increasingly frustrated with negotiations with Iran in recent days.

On Tuesday, he told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he wanted to give diplomacy another chance. But by Thursday evening, according to two sources, he was leaning toward ordering an attack.

A source close to Trump said the president has raised the possibility of a major “decisive” military operation, after which he could declare victory and end the war. However, there is no indication that Trump has made a decision to resume the war.

Trump has been seen coming close to restarting the war several times over the past six weeks before backing off. Some sources close to the negotiations still believe there is a chance of some kind of breakthrough within the next 24 hours. However, two sources familiar with Trump's thinking said he appears inclined to proceed with military action unless something unexpected happens in the talks.

Iranian reaction

Iran's Foreign Ministry said Friday that talks were continuing but an agreement was not imminent. The semi-official Tasnim news agency, affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, quoted a source close to the Iranian negotiating team as saying that "talks on controversial issues are still ongoing and no final result has been reached."

The source said that the current focus is "ending the war" and that no other issues will be negotiated until this is achieved. /Adapted from Pamphlet /
