A group of files containing sensitive and personal information of senior law enforcement officers at Europol have disappeared.
It is believed that the disappearance of the files has to do with the investigative processes within the Hague-based institution itself. Some of the missing files include that of Europol's Executive Director, Catherine De Volle, and two of her deputy directors, Jürgen Ebner and Jean-Philippe Lecouffe.
"On September 6, 2023, the Europol Directorate was informed that the personal files of several Europol staff members had disappeared. When officials checked all the agency's records, they discovered missing files. "Given Europol's role as a law enforcement authority, the disappearance of staff members' personal files constitutes a serious incident of security and personal data breach," reads Europol's statement.
Politico reports that some of the lost files resurfaced after a citizen found them dumped in a public place in The Hague and brought them to the local police station. The number of missing files and why they were taken from within the institution will never be known.
Human resources files can contain information about officials' job application, relevant training, dates of birth, marital status, dependents, current address and other regular information, one of the officials told Politico.
Europol is one of the largest anti-organized crime agencies of the European Union. It coordinates major international investigations and operations with national police authorities and partners such as Interpol and the United States FBI.
