
The Greek MEP, Eva Kaili, testified on Tuesday at the Legal Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, related to the fraud scandal regarding her payments to the deputies and the reward that she herself allegedly received.
The hearing in the Committee on Legal Affairs concerns the case initiated by the European Public Prosecutor's Office, last December, asking the European Parliament to waive its immunity, for possible fraud against the EU budget, in relation to parliamentary allowances and remuneration of assistants.
Mrs. Kaili's lawyer was also present at today's session, who pointed out that the European Court of Justice has decided that such cases are related to administrative matters and not to criminal matters.
The Greek member of the European Parliament was arrested by Belgian police as part of a "major investigation" and she became known for being a participant in a criminal organization, money laundering and corruption. Kaili is suspected of accepting "large sums of money" and of illegal lobbying in favor of a Persian Gulf state, which Belgian media have identified as Qatar, the host of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The Greek MEP has been accused of embezzling funds. of the EU in the amount of 15 million euros.
