US President Joe Biden in his speech to the General Assembly called for international cooperation to tackle global challenges, stressing that countries around the world share a common future.
He began his speech by saying that it is possible for enemies to become partners as a series of global crises grip the world - including the war in Ukraine. He added that "wounds can be healed" and "adversaries can become partners", implying that relations with Russia can be restored again.
" I understand the task that my country has to lead at this critical moment. The United States seeks a safer, more prosperous, more equal world for all people because we know that our future is tied to yours. No nation can meet today's challenges alone ," Biden told world leaders.
As for the war in Ukraine, he urged world leaders not to allow support for Ukraine to wane, saying Russia is banking on the idea that countries may tire of the protracted conflict that "will allow it to brutalize Ukraine without consequences".
"If we abandon the core principles of the UN charter to appease an aggressor, can any member state feel confident that it is protected? If we allow Ukraine to be dug up, is the independence of any nation secure?" , he said.
He said the US and its partners would "defend democracy", adding that they must stand against this aggression today to deter other potential aggressors tomorrow.
Only Russia stands on the path to peace, he said, before reiterating his country's commitment to support Ukraine and drawing applause from those gathered, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Biden also asked the UN Security Council to authorize a multinational force to help restore security in Haiti, which continues to suffer from gang violence.
