Former US President Donald Trump has been sued for mishandling classified documents at his Florida estate after leaving the White House.
In doing so, Trump has sparked a federal prosecution that is perhaps the most dangerous of the many legal threats against him as the former president seeks to retake the White House. He faces 7 charges, including unauthorized possession of classified files. The charges have not yet been made public.
The criminal case, brought by the US Department of Justice, poses another legal hurdle for Trump as he seeks to regain the US presidency next year.
He already faces a criminal case in New York that will go to trial in March.
Trump said on social media that he had been summoned to appear in federal court in Miami on Tuesday. "I am innocent," wrote the former American president on his Truth Social platform.
Legal experts say the indictment will not limit Trump's ability to run for president again.
"He can be impeached any time and it won't stop his ability to run for office," said David Super, a professor at the Georgetown University Law Center.
He noted that Trump could still run for office even if convicted in the documents case. The real estate and reality TV mogul is currently the front-runner among Republican candidates for the White House, according to opinion polls.
