A bruised hand, swollen feet, and strangely confusing messages from the US President have sparked public and media debate about Donald Trump's health for days.
The fact that the 79-year-old claims in a message on his social media platform Truth Social that he has "never felt better in his life" and that "DC is a crime-free area" has only further fueled the debate.
Meanwhile, figures from the MAGA milieu, which is generally quite uncritical of the president, have also publicly contributed to the rumors.
According to a report by the American portal The Daily Beast, right-wing white supremacist activist Nick Fuentes, in a post on X, accused the White House of hiding the health of a US president after Joe Biden. Several media outlets, including Spiegel and T-Online in Germany, have interviewed medical experts about the apparent signs of the possible illness.
The fact that the information circulating about Donald Trump's health is largely speculative is also due to the White House's overall communications strategies. For example, White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt attributed a bruise on Trump's right hand to the president's busy meetings, saying that Trump had to shake hands "every day, all the time." In another report, The Daily Beast analyzed official White House photos from recent days and found that in most cases, Trump's feet were cut off or hidden behind objects. Analysis of photos not used by the White House shows that Trump's ankles appear noticeably swollen.
Regarding the bruise on the hand, a similar form of which has repeatedly appeared in press photos of the then-presidential candidate for more than a year, the news portal T-Online spoke with a vascular expert who considers the White House explanation extremely unlikely and explained that a bruise could have resulted not only from an injury or illness, but also from the president taking blood or inserting an intravenous infusion. Before the bruise appeared in photos of the meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, it was clearly visible in some photos that Trump's hand was covered in makeup.
Further fueling speculation earlier in the week was the fact that, according to persistent media reports, Trump had not attended any public events for days and had not been seen in public for some time, before a golf game over the weekend. During the same period, Vice President J.D. Vance explicitly stated in an interview that he was ready to take over the presidency if "a terrible tragedy" occurred, but later reiterated that the president was in excellent health.
However, as for Trump's health, it has been confirmed for several weeks that he suffers from chronic venous insufficiency, which can lead to varicose veins in the legs. Doctors say this common aging condition is harmless in most cases. An expert told Der Spiegel that it is unlikely that the bruises on Trump's hand are related to this.
