The European Union will deploy additional satellites in low Earth orbit to increase resistance to interference in the GPS system, with the main aim of improving their reconnaissance capabilities, EU Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius said.
His statements came after yesterday's incident, in which the GPS system on European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's plane lost access to GPS navigation services while approaching Plovdiv Airport in Bulgaria.
"We can confirm that there was indeed interference with the GPS signal, but the plane landed safely in Bulgaria. The Bulgarian authorities have informed us that they suspect this is due to overt interference by Russia," Commission spokeswoman Arianna Podesta said yesterday.
