Gunshots were reported at San Diego's largest Islamic center, in the Clairemont neighborhood, where authorities say at least two people were killed and several others were injured.
San Diego police stated that the situation "is under control" and that "the threat has been neutralized."
Aerial footage broadcast by American television shows a large police presence outside the mosque, which is located in a mainly residential area, about 14 kilometers north of downtown San Diego.
According to the institution's official website, it is the largest mosque in San Diego County. The complex also includes the Al Rashid School, which offers courses in Arabic, Islamic studies, and the Quran.
Aerial footage shows children being escorted out of the center by police. A school spokesperson told CNN that students and staff are currently safe.
Authorities are also preparing a center near the incident area for reuniting students with their families after the emergency ends.
