Three people were killed and at least eight others were injured after a man opened fire from a boat into a crowd gathered at a waterfront bar in a coastal North Carolina town on Saturday night, US authorities said.
The shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. local time near a number of popular bars and restaurants in Southport, located 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Wilmington.
Investigators said the suspected attacker was on a small boat near the shore and suddenly stopped and fired into the crowd, then fled.
Almost half an hour later, the US Coast Guard encountered the suspect and arrested him.
US authorities have not revealed the identity of the suspect and have not indicated the motives for this case.
Investigators from several agencies – including the State Bureau of Investigation and the Coast Guard – continued to collect evidence at the scene and interview witnesses on Sunday.
