The Russian Navy is on high alert after reports of a fuel leak on the Russian nuclear-powered submarine Novorossiysk, which is currently sailing in the Mediterranean Sea towards Gibraltar.
According to reports, the Novorossiysk crew may be forced to pump fuel from the bunker directly into the sea to avoid the risk of an explosion. The situation is considered critical, given that the submarine can carry advanced long-range weapons.
The Novorossiysk submarine, which belongs to the Russian Black Sea Fleet, has a crew of 52 and can stay underwater for up to 45 days. Last July, it was spotted by the British Navy passing through the North Sea and the English Channel, which had caused strong concerns in the West about the movements of Russian submarines near strategic waters.
The Royal Navy has increased its patrols to prevent any violations and deal with suspicions of "hybrid attacks" attributed to Moscow through the so-called "shadow fleet".
Although there is no evidence that Novorossiysk was directly involved in the war against Ukraine, Kiev announced in August 2024 that it had sunk its "sister" submarine, the Rostov, in an operation that was considered a significant blow to the Russian fleet.
The fuel leak raises fears in the West, as the presence of a potentially nuclear-armed submarine in an unstable technical condition in the Mediterranean poses not only military but also environmental risks.
