Operations at the Lanaz refinery in the northern Iraqi city of Erbil have been completely suspended after a drone attack caused a large fire at the facility, provincial officials in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region said, speaking to Reuters and other international agencies.
The attack occurred today, when a drone hit the refinery, sparking a fire that quickly spread and caused significant damage to the facility's installations. According to security sources and officials from the Ministry of Natural Resources of Iraqi Kurdistan, work at the refinery will remain suspended until the fire is completely extinguished and a full assessment of the damage is carried out.
The Lanaz refinery, located in the Lajan area near Erbil, plays an important role in the production and distribution of oil and derived products in the Kurdish region. Some reports suggest that the facility also supplies fuel to foreign military bases, including the US ones in Iraq, but there is no official confirmation of this from the authorities.
There have been no reported civilian or military casualties from the attack on the refinery itself, but tensions in the region are high. Global oil prices have risen in response to the incident, reflecting concerns about the stability of energy supplies in the region.
