The United States Embassy in Baghdad has issued a strong emergency warning, urging American citizens in Iraq to leave the country immediately after a new attack on its diplomatic compound overnight.
According to the embassy's official statement, the latest attack, which comes amid heightened regional tensions, has significantly increased the risk to American citizens. The embassy emphasizes that Iranian-backed terrorist militias pose a significant and ongoing threat, including missile attacks, drones, and the possibility of kidnappings.
" US citizens who choose to remain in Iraq are strongly encouraged to reconsider their decision given the significant threat posed by Iranian-backed terrorist militias ," the embassy statement said.
The embassy has clarified that it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide regular updates to help citizens make informed decisions about their safety.
For those who want to leave, the US is offering assistance in the form of updated information on available departure options, including land routes to neighboring countries such as Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia or Turkey, as airspace can often be closed or have unexpected restrictions.
US officials have suspended regular consular services in Baghdad and Erbil, and are advising citizens not to go to embassy or consulate premises due to the ongoing risk of missile and drone attacks.
This warning comes amid a deteriorating security situation in Iraq and the region, where Iran-linked groups have carried out repeated attacks on American interests, including strikes on the embassy, critical infrastructure and hotels frequented by foreigners.
