Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said he condemned nationalist and xenophobic chants against Albanians during a match in Kumanovo. Meanwhile, the president of Kosovo has demanded that the neighboring country take immediate measures against the organizers of the anti-Albanian chants.
According to Albanian politicians in North Macedonia, during the basketball match between North Macedonia and Romania over the weekend, chants such as "a good Albanian is a dead Albanian", "gas chamber for Albanians", and "clean Macedonia" were heard.
Also present at this event, which was the first match of the second phase of pre-qualifications for the 2027 World Cup in Qatar, were Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, Deputy Prime Minister Ivan Stoilkovic, and Minister of Internal Affairs Pancho Toshkovski.
Mickoski, during a statement to the media on August 4, said that even though he was present in the hall, he did not "notice" the fans who chanted these slogans, as he said that "we were talking about a small group of people."
"I want to use this opportunity to join in condemning nationalism and xenophobia – first for what happened during the basketball match between [North] Macedonia and Romania, and then to send a message to all fan groups: to support in a sporting manner, to support their team and the Macedonian national team," Mickoski said.
He said that calls against Albanians “will be subject to investigation and sanctions, regardless of where they come from.” The Macedonian prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into the incident.
"I want to repeat once again: I absolutely condemn the unusual and unacceptable cheering of some individuals, which was not met with support from anyone present in the hall," he said.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Sports, Borko Ristovski, said that this ministry cannot react specifically to this event, "because it does not come from any sports entity - it comes from fans in the stands - and we have no competence to react when it comes to fans."
"However, let me take this opportunity to make an appeal: in Macedonia there is no need for such cheers, neither from one side nor the other, from anyone, from whichever side it comes from."
He added that "from the position of the Ministry of Sports, we cannot do anything other than help identify them and act in accordance with the law."
The Criminal Code of North Macedonia provides for penalties for racist incitement and hate speech in several articles, the most important of which is Article 319, which stipulates that anyone who publicly incites or spreads hatred, discord or intolerance on racial, religious, ethnic or national grounds is punished with imprisonment from one to five years.
Reactions in North Macedonia, Albania and Kosovo
Incidenti në Kumanovë shkaktoi reagime në Maqedoni të Veriut, Shqipëri e Kosovë.
Partia shqiptare në opozitë në Maqedoni të Veriut, Bashkimi Demokratik për Integrim (BDI), tha se në këtë ngjarje “u dëgjuan kore antishqiptare, thirrje raciste dhe gjuhë e pastër e urrejtjes etnike ndaj shqiptarëve”.
Kjo parti tha më 3 gusht se më shqetësuese është fakti që Qeveria dhe përfaqësuesit shtetërorë të pranishëm heshtën për këtë ngjarje.
“Nuk pati as reagim institucional, as dënim moral, as distancim politik. Vetëm miratim me heshtje, që për ne është po aq i rëndë sa vetë koret”, tha BDI që kërkoi hetim urgjent për ngjarjen, sanksione ndaj organizatorëve, distancim publik nga Qeveria dhe përfshirjen e faktorit ndërkombëtar për monitorimin e përhapjes së gjuhës së urrejtjes dhe, siç tha, nacionalizmit institucional.
“Të gjithë duhet ta dinë: Nuk do të lejojmë kthimin e vendit në arenë të urrejtjes etnike. Nuk do të lejojmë që shqiptarët të bëhen shënjestër e thirrjeve fashiste. Nuk do të heshtim as tani, as në të ardhmen”, tha BDI.
Ndërkaq, sekretari i Përgjithshëm i Aleancës për Shqiptarët, Blerant Ramadani, tha se heshtja e krerëve shtetërorë për ngjarjen në Kumanovë është “bashkëpërgjegjësi morale dhe politike”.
“Në një shtet që aspiron Bashkimin Evropian, gjuha e urrejtjes nuk mund të tolerohet, relativizohet apo heshtet. Kërkojmë hetim urgjent, ndëshkim shembullor dhe reagim institucional të menjëhershëm”, shkroi ai në Facebook të dielën.
Në Kosovë, presidentja e vendit dhe deputetë të partive që mandatin e kaluar kanë qenë në opozitë kanë reaguar ashpër për këtë ngjarje.
Të hënën, presidentja e Kosovës, Vjosa Osmani, tha se thirrjet antishqiptare të dëgjuara në Kumanovë janë të papranueshme dhe “cenojnë frymën e bashkëjetesës dhe respektit të ndërsjellë”.
“Shqiptarët janë popull autokton në trojet e tyre si dhe meritojnë të trajtohen me dinjitet dhe barazi, ashtu si çdo komunitet tjetër”, tha Osmani.
Presidentja e Kosovës kërkoi që shteti maqedonas të veprojë dhe të ndëshkojë ata që nxisin urrejtje.
“U bëjmë thirrje institucioneve të Maqedonisë së Veriut që të ndërmarrin masa të menjëhershme kundër organizatorëve të këtyre thirrjeve, përgjegjësve dhe atyre që nxisin e përhapin urrejtje, duke dënuar çdo formë të gjuhës së urrejtjes, mbrojtur parimet e bashkëjetesës dhe tolerancës, si vlera bazë të një shteti që synon integrimin në BE”, tha Osmani.
Një ditë më parë, Artan Behrami nga Partia Demokratike e Kosovës, kritikoi mosreagimin e kryeministrit në detyrë, Albin Kurti, të ministres në detyrë të Punëve të Jashtme dhe Diasporës, Donika Gërvalla, por edhe të presidentes.
“Hristijan Mickoski has become the prime minister of North Macedonia with the blessing and vote that Albin Kurti brought him directly through the VALEN coalition,” Behrami wrote on Facebook, adding that “Kurti’s silence is more than indifference - it is political and moral complicity.” MP Daut Haradinaj from the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo was also critical of Kurti’s lack of reaction. He said that Kurti is the “godfather of the governing coalition in North Macedonia” and that the new leadership there is “giving them alms” with racist calls against Albanians.
During the recent elections in North Macedonia, several Albanian parties joined a coalition called VLEN. Bekim Qoku from the Vetëvendosje Movement, led by Albin Kurti, joined this list.
