Putin-Zelensky meeting, Kremlin sets conditions for Ukrainian President

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed that Russian President Vladimir Putin does not rule out the possibility of negotiations with the representative of the Kiev regime, Volodymyr Zelensky, but only after thorough preparation at the expert level.

"I want to remind you that the president himself does not rule out the possibility of such a meeting. After the necessary part of the work at the expert level has been completed and the necessary distance has been covered," Peskov explained.

As the president's press secretary noted, for such a meeting, it is necessary to overcome certain stages of coordination in order to lay the foundation for a productive dialogue. Currently, according to him, the preparatory work has not yet been completed and the parties have a considerable way to go.

Recently, Volodymyr Zelensky reacted to Vladimir Putin's statements about the need to establish a long-term peace. On his social networks, the Ukrainian politician announced his readiness for negotiations at the highest level.

The Kremlin said on Monday that Moscow does not rule out a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US special envoy Steve Witkoff this week, as the latter is due to visit the country.

"We do not rule out the possibility of such a meeting," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters during a press conference.

Peskov's comments came as US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that Witkoff could travel to Russia "on Wednesday or Thursday".

The visit will take place a few days before a 10-day deadline set by Trump for Russia to reach a ceasefire agreement with Ukraine, which expires on August 8.

In June, Trump had given Russia a 50-day deadline, after which he threatened to impose import tariffs of up to 100% on Russia and its trading partners if Moscow and Kiev did not reach an agreement.

On July 29, Trump announced that he had decided to shorten this deadline to 10 days due to his "disappointment" with Putin.

Responding to Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin called on him to avoid "excessive expectations" and resume talks on the issue.

"As for any disappointment that comes from anyone, all disappointments arise from excessive expectations. This is a well-known general rule," Putin said at a press conference in the town of Valaam.
