The Greece-Turkey High Cooperation Council is expected to convene in Ankara before mid-February, with the participation of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The meeting, expected to take place a few days before the start of Ramadan, is seen as an effort to keep communication channels open and maintain calm in relations between the two countries.

The most likely dates for the meeting will be between February 9 and 13.

According to an ERT source, "keeping open channels of communication is considered absolutely necessary to avoid crises and ensure calm in Greek-Turkish relations."

As the same source characteristically noted, “Athens and Ankara share the view that issues concerning both countries should be discussed at a bilateral level.” He even emphasized that “one can easily imagine how things would be if, in this environment of global uncertainty, Greek-Turkish relations were to break down.”

Although, as he emphasized, "convergence on fundamental issues has not been achieved," it has been possible "to avoid serious tensions and to keep issues that in the past led to crises at a low level."

Regarding the Greek side's expectations, the highest diplomatic source said that Athens expects a constructive discussion, clarifying, however, that "the conditions for the big step do not yet exist."

As he explained, Greece and Turkey are unable to enter into a substantive discussion on the continental shelf and maritime boundaries, as there is no common position regarding their scope, an issue that the Greek side considers non-negotiable.

"We will not enter into a discussion on any sovereignty issue ," he stressed.

The agenda of the Supreme Cooperation Council will be formed, according to the same source, based on the positive agenda and political dialogue currently underway between Athens and Ankara.
