Federal investigators braved difficult terrain Monday to find the remains of a private jet to solve the mystery of why the plane veered off course and crashed into a mountain, killing all four people on board.
A day after the plane flew over the nation's capital, prompting the military to respond by mobilizing fighter jets, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a brief update that the pilot and three passengers were killed and that the plane was "destroyed" in the crash. Their identities were not immediately released.
National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigator Adam Gerhardt told reporters it will take time to reach the remote crash site, nearly 5 kilometers north of Montebello. Investigators are expected to remain at the scene for at least three to four days. NTSB spokeswoman Jennifer Gabris said investigators were forced to walk to the scene because of the mountainous terrain.
Attention to the crash and its cause was heightened by the unusual flight path over Washington, and by the noise caused by the sonic waves of military aircraft that was heard throughout the capital and parts of the states of Maryland and Virginia. The North American Aerospace Defense Command said in a statement that the military aircraft was authorized to travel at supersonic speeds, which caused the loud noise.
Speaking at a news conference on Monday morning, Mr Gerhardt said the remains were "very fragmented" and investigators would examine the more delicate evidence at the scene. Next, the pieces will be moved, possibly by helicopter, to Dellauer, where they can be examined further, he said. The plane is not required to have a flight recorder, but it is possible that it has other flight equipment that will have data that can be examined, Mr. Gerhardt said.
Investigators will look into why the pilot was unresponsive and why the plane flew on the trajectory in question, he said. They will consider several factors regularly examined in such investigations, including the plane, its engines, weather conditions, pilot qualifications and maintenance records, he said.
