The destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine amounts to "genocide," but Ukrainian and regional officials are working to ensure the safety of local residents. This is what the head of the presidential administration of Ukraine said, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky gathered the Security Council of Ukraine today.
The head of the presidential administration, Andriy Yermak, also said that Russia's actions pose a threat to the neighboring Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
Likewise, the secretary of the National Security Council, Oleksii Danilov, said that President Zelenskiy will convene the said council today after the explosion that occurred at the Nova Kahovka hydroelectric dam.
At least 22,000 people living in 14 settlements in the Russian-controlled Kherson region are at risk of flooding due to the attack on the dam this morning. The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has said that up to 80 settlements are at risk.
Evacuations of areas around the Kakhovka dam on the Dnipro River have already begun, while a Ukrainian official warned there were only five hours left until the water reaches a "critical level". The water level around the dam had risen by five meters.
