Macedonian police have arrested 23 people on suspicion of involvement in the tragedy that occurred inside a nightclub in Kocani on the morning of March 16.

According to police investigations so far, the fire occurred as a result of fireworks brought by the musical group performing there.

Among those arrested are former Economy Minister Kreshnik Bekteshi, former Director of Crisis Management Bekim Maksuti and former State Secretary Razmena Çekic Durovic. Today, it was the Prime Minister himself who threatened the DUI that they would be taken away from their homes.

" The informal owner of the club, the ticket seller, four people who served as bodyguards, the head of the security agency, the owner of the building where the club operated, three people from the State Market Inspectorate, one from the Labor Inspectorate and another person related to the case have been arrested ," said Pance Toshkovski, Minister of Interior, Alsat reports.

Toshkovski said that during the investigation it was found that the club operated with two fire extinguishers, there was no evacuation door and pyrotechnic devices were lit in violation of the law. Toshkovski stated that the police have no legal obligation to secure such facilities. Regarding the role of the police inside the facility, Toshkovski said that MUP officials were also involved in the investigation.

" Everyone who is directly or indirectly guilty in this case will be held accountable. Everyone, I repeat everyone, according to the law. Does this apply to the mayor? This applies to everyone," emphasized Pance Toshkovski, Minister of Interior.

The investigation found that the facility had no hydration network or functional hydration equipment. There were no fire extinguishers in relation to the space within which it operated. There were no two doors for evacuation as required by law. Instead, there was an improvised metal door at the back, which was closed and insulated with soundproofing.

There is no access from both sides for fire engines according to rules and protocols. The interior of the building was built with plaster and there was no fire protection layer. There was also no system for notifying people in case of an alarm.
