
Thirty-six Democrats are now calling for the president to step down
A week after the assassination, almost at the same time, Donald Trump received a hero's welcome in Michigan, where he returned to the campaign.
His security forces were reinforced, as the rally took place indoors. Trump thanked God that he is alive.
" I stand before you only thanks to God Almighty. This is true. Otherwise I would not be here today ," he said. Earlier, his doctor revealed that one of the bullets missed his head by less than a quarter of an inch.
" What did I do for democracy? I took a bullet for democracy ," he said.
The bandage on his ear was softened, but the rhetoric was not, as he capitalized on the Democrats' woes. " They don't know who their candidate is. We don't know who their candidate is. We're going to take back the White House in a monumental victory ," Trump added.
The contrast is stark. Trump brags about his survival, while Biden is fighting for survival.
Secluded in Delaware, the president is said to be feeling "angry and betrayed" by Democratic members of Congress who are calling on him to step down.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who previously ran against Biden in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, has said Vice President Kamala Harris is "ready" if he steps down.
" What gives me a lot of hope right now is that, if President Biden decides to retire, we have Vice President Kamala Harris who is ready to rise up to unite the party, take on Donald Trump and win in November ," she told MSNBC.

If chosen to replace her, Ms Harris would be the party's first black woman and the first person of South Asian descent to be a presidential candidate, but not everyone is behind her.
Top officials, including former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, prefer an open process to choose a replacement, believing it would strengthen a Democratic nomination when they face Republican Donald Trump.
New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez told her Instagram followers on Friday: " If you think there's a consensus among people who want Joe Biden out ... that they're going to support Kamala Harris, Vice President, you're wrong. . Many of them are not only interested in taking down the president. They are interested in taking down the whole group ."
