Trump punishes Vucic, Serbia on the list of countries with the highest tariffs
US President Donald Trump

The White House has released the highest tariffs announced against US trading partners by President Trump.

Syria tops the list with a new tariff rate of 41%, a remarkable figure for a country still trying to recover from a 14-year civil war that has just ended.

Laos and Myanmar come next on the list, each with tariffs of 40%. Experts had previously warned that Trump's new tariffs were expected to hit Asian economies particularly hard.

Switzerland is listed with a tariff of 39%. As we have previously reported, it is the only country that does significant trade with the US that faces such a high tariff level.

Iraq and Serbia will each face a 35% tariff.

Four other countries will be hit with 30% tariffs: Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Libya and South Africa.

The revised tariffs are expected to take effect in seven days, at 12:01 a.m. Washington time on August 7, not today, August 1, as previously planned, according to a government official.

The minimum tariff rate for imports from most countries not listed below is set at 10%. Goods found to have been transshipped to avoid higher tariffs will be subject to additional tariffs.

Those countries that sign trade agreements before the deadline are subject to the announced tariffs. Thus, products from the European Union, Japan, South Korea will be taxed at 15%, the UK at 10%. Some economies, such as China, Canada and Mexico, follow different trade routes and are covered by different provisions.
