Rubio rejects Britain, France and Canada's plans to recognize Palestine:

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has rejected plans by several countries such as the United Kingdom, France and Canada to recognize a Palestinian state, calling them "irrelevant" and "counterproductive".

His comments, made during an interview with Fox News Radio on Thursday, come at a time when tensions in the Middle East remain high due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

"It's annoying to some, but it's irrelevant. It doesn't mean anything ," Rubio said, arguing that recognition of a Palestinian state by these countries carries no real weight.

According to him, no state can be created without Israel's approval, while adding that even the very definition of a Palestinian state remains unclear.

"They can't even tell you where this Palestinian state is. They can't tell you who will govern it ," he said, emphasizing the lack of a clear framework for such a state.

Rubio went further, warning that recognizing a Palestinian state could have negative consequences, calling it a "reward" for Hamas, the militant group that controls Gaza. According to the senior US diplomat, such a move could discourage efforts to reach a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict in the region.

"I think it's counterproductive ," he added.

The Secretary of State also suggested that these countries' decisions to recognize a Palestinian state may be motivated more by domestic political pressure than geopolitical considerations.

"Some of these countries have large constituencies now that are pressuring them domestically to align themselves with this side, regardless of the geopolitical consequences ," Rubio said, suggesting that world leaders may be trying to appease their political bases.

This US stance could affect diplomatic dynamics with Western allies, who are considering unilateral steps to recognize Palestine. However, Rubio made it clear that, in his opinion, any attempt to create a Palestinian state without Israeli involvement and approval is doomed to failure and could worsen the situation on the ground.
