US President Donald Trump has criticized Britain's decision to hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius as one of the reasons he wants to take control of Greenland.
In a post on Truth Social, he said the UK's plan to hand over sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius is "a great act of stupidity."
"Astonishingly, our 'great' NATO ally, the United Kingdom, is currently planning to give Diego Garcia Island, the site of a vital U.S. military base, to Mauritius, and to do so for no reason whatsoever. There is no doubt that China and Russia have noticed this act of utter weakness. These are international powers that know only POWER, which is why the United States of America, under my leadership, is now, after just one year, respected as never before. The United Kingdom's surrender of such an incredibly important piece of land is a huge act of folly and is yet another National Security reason why Greenland must be taken. Denmark and her European allies must do the right thing. Thank you for your attention to this matter," Trump wrote.

Darren Jones, the principal secretary to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, said the agreement with Mauritius had been finally approved and the legislation for the process had been signed. He stressed that this ensures the operation of the US military base on Diego Garcia for the next 100 years.
Jones added that the US had previously approved the agreement and that international law required such an agreement to protect the base's military capabilities. He also praised the British government's diplomatic approach as more effective in the face of criticism and changes in the US administration.
Meanwhile, Reform leader Nigel Farage, close to Trump, has come out in support of the US president, writing that Trump has vetoed the handover of the Chagos Islands.
