The two great autocrats of the century are designing a new world order, where borders are not respected but negotiated. The Balkans risk becoming a bargaining table between the two superpowers, while Europe's silence and the region's apathy are paving the way for a new crisis.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke today about what has been warned for days: an open Russia-US bargain for the division of the Balkans.
The Trump-Putin meeting in Alaska seems to have been more than just about Ukraine. The two leaders seem to have agreed to 'rule' the world. Trump attacked Venezuela and Putin didn't say a word, even though he had given Maduro guarantees. Trump wants to enter Greenland and Moscow gave him the green light today.
" Greenland, in principle, is not a natural part of Denmark, is it? It was neither part of Norway nor of Denmark. It is a colonial occupation. The fact that the inhabitants are now used to it and feel comfortable with it is another matter ," Lavrov said. Meanwhile, Russia insists on the occupied territories in Ukraine. But while each is getting what it wants, it seems that its eyes are turned to the Balkans.
Lavrov made a frightening statement today, which appears to suggest that the US and Russia are negotiating the "dismemberment" of the region.
" We have more opportunities to communicate with the United States [than with the European Union] regarding the Balkans, when it comes to Bosnia and Herzegovina and other countries in the region. These contacts are continuing. They have not yet resulted in any positive results or anything else. But we are open to such contacts, and as far as I can judge, our American colleagues are also willing to develop them ," Lavrov was quoted as saying at a press conference, according to the Reuters news agency.
And not coincidentally, not long ago, Trump lifted sanctions on Bosnian leader Milorad Dodik, one of the most pro-Russian people in the Balkans.
These developments are not happening by chance. They are part of a global strategy being pushed by the Trump-Putin axis to divide the world into spheres of influence, Cold War-style, but with a new brutality. Trump is the only American politician who does not hide his sympathy for authoritarian leaders. Meanwhile, Putin, crushed in Ukraine, is seeking at all costs a strategic victory in the Balkans, where he has loyal allies and a long history of influence.
While the EU wanders slowly and entangled in bureaucracy, the Trump-led US is offering negotiating tables for territories. The Balkans are in danger of a repeat of the 1990s, but this time with a new mix: an America that does not hinder separatist projects, but may sponsor them, and a Russia that seeks a corridor of instability to cause a crisis at Europe's doorstep. /Pamphlet
