US President Donald Trump personally delivered a letter from his wife, Melania Trump, to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, at the summit that took place in Alaska.
The letter raised the issue of the plight of children in Ukraine and Russia, White House officials told Reuters news agency.
The first lady, who was born in Slovenia, was not in Alaska, but officials said her letter mentioned child abductions during the war.
The government in Kiev estimates that at least 19,500 children have been abducted and forcibly displaced from their homes and territories occupied by Russia since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022.
The issue is extremely sensitive here in Ukraine, where many believe that no peace agreement should be reached without an agreement on the return of all abductees.
In 2023, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Putin and his commissioner for children's rights, Maria Lvova-Belova, for the alleged illegal deportation of children.
