The attempt to break the police blockades, the spraying of water and the resistance of the officers with their shields, prevented the 500 pro-Palestinian protesters from leaving Piazza Verdi and heading towards the Israeli embassy, "La Reppublica" writes.
The demonstration called by Palestinian groups for 6pm in Rome has created tensions in the heart of Parioli.
The organizers had notified the police of a static protest, but on social media they spread the invitation to march towards the Auditorium Parco della Musica, where the Film Festival is taking place, passing by the nearby Israeli embassy on Via Mercati, which is guarded by dozens of armored police vehicles.
A few meters from Piazza Verdi are also the Ukrainian embassy, on Guido D'Arezzo Street, and the residence of the American ambassador, on Rossini Street.
The organizers refused to negotiate with the police and tried to leave the protest, but were stopped by the police.
"We are moving towards Via Aldrovandi," said Paolo Di Vetta of the Housing Rights Movement at 6 pm, speaking into the microphone.
"We want to reach the Auditorium and the Israeli Embassy. The police are blocking everything with water. If they attack us, we must stay united."
Some protesters managed to break the blockades and were then stopped on Via Paisiello.
The director of public order communicated to the protesters "the order of the police commissioner, in accordance with the Consolidated Law on Public Security, which officially prohibits any movement of protesters to other places", the Police Headquarters stressed, adding that at the same time "the promoters are ordered, in accordance with the Consolidated Law on Public Security, to disperse the demonstration".
After several attempts to break the blockades in Piazza Verdi, the protesters tried to march through the streets of Parioli, but were stopped again at the corner of Via Monteverdi and Via Paisiello.
Although the protesters were told again that the demonstration would end, they tried to continue as a group towards Piazza Verdi. At that point, the water cannons were activated again.
"We had given prior notice of a march and were assured that we would be allowed. Instead, they suggested that we march through the biopark, but without Palestinian flags, and then attacked us in Piazza Verdi while we held our hands up and tried to negotiate the march. This is unacceptable," said Vito Scalisi, president of Arci Roma.
