Turkey is expected to send four fighter jets to the northern part of Cyprus, which is controlled by Turkish Cypriots, on Sunday, according to information published by the Turkish Cypriot newspaper "Yeni Düzen".
According to Protothema, the planes will land at Tymbo Airport, which operates in territory controlled by Turkish Cypriot authorities. The report notes that security measures at the airport have been increased in recent days.
The newspaper links this move to recent security developments in the region and a reported attack on British bases in Cyprus. According to the same source, Ankara is acting within the framework of its role as a "guarantor power", aiming to strengthen the defense of the Turkish Cypriot administration.
"Yeni Düzen" writes that so far there has been no official announcement from the Turkish Cypriot authorities about the deployment of the aircraft.
Meanwhile, sources from the Turkish Ministry of National Defense stated that, in light of recent developments, a gradual planning is underway to ensure the security of the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.” According to these sources, the deployment of F-16 fighter jets to the island is one of the options being considered.
The possible deployment of the aircraft comes at a time when tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean region remain high and the Cyprus issue continues to be unresolved internationally.
