Iran has responded to US President Donald Trump's threats, stressing that it is considering new American targets to strike.
Trump declared that Iran "will be hit very hard" on Saturday, while adding that the United States is considering new targets in Iran for "total destruction and certain death."
A senior Iranian official told CNN that the US has "clearly threatened to expand the war against the Iranian people and strike them immediately."
"For this reason, the Islamic Republic announces that it will seriously examine the areas, forces and related American entities that have not so far been included in the list of targets of the Iranian armed forces and will take action against them in the event of reckless actions by the enemy," the official said.
He did not provide further details and did not specify when attacks on the expanded list of targets might begin.
In a reaction published on the social network Truth, the US president clearly warned that Iran will face a strong attack today and that the targets may be expanded to areas and groups that have not been part of previous military operations.
"Today Iran will be hit very hard. Total destruction and certain death are being seriously considered for areas and groups of people that up until this point were not considered targets, due to Iran's bad behavior," Trump wrote.
The security situation in the Middle East remains highly tense following a series of military attacks and counterattacks between Iran, Israel and US forces in the region. The United States and Israel have carried out attacks on targets linked to Iran and its military structures.
