Nasrallah's Successor Survives Attacks, Who Is Hashem Safieddine Who Could

The assassination of Hassan Nasrallah puts a man widely regarded as his heir, Hashem Safieddine, back into the spotlight.

Safieddine, who oversees Hezbollah's political affairs and sits on the Jihad Council, is a cousin of Nasrallah.

Like him, he is a cleric who wears a black turban, indicating descent from Islam's prophet Muhammad.

A source told Reuters that he survived the Israeli attacks.

Here's what we know about it :

Nasrallah "began to tailor positions for him within a number of different councils in the Lebanese Hezbollah. "Some of them were more obscure than others," said Phillip Smyth, an expert who studies Iranian-backed Shiite militias.

In June, he threatened escalation against Israel after the killing of another Hezbollah commander.

His public statements often reflect Hezbollah's militant stance. At a recent event in Dahiyeh, he declared: "Our history, our weapons and rockets are with you," in a show of solidarity with Palestinian fighters.

The US State Department designated Safieddin a terrorist in 2017. He has been vocal in his criticism of US policy. In response to US pressure on Hezbollah, he declared in 2017: "This insane US administration led by Trump will not be able to harm the resistance," he said.
