Pakistan's Senate opposition leader Raja Nasir Abbas has demanded in parliament that the government withdraw from the Gaza Peace Board following joint US-Israeli attacks on Iran. His statement came amid massive pro-Iran protests in several cities across the country.
Protesters attacked the US consulate in Pakistan. Clashes with security forces led to the deaths of more than 30 pro-Iran protesters, according to reports from the ground. Authorities have not yet released a final official death toll.
In his speech to the Senate, Abbas referred to US President Donald Trump and stated that he is creating global instability through the use of force. He stressed that Pakistan should leave the peace board for Gaza.
The opposition alliance, which includes former Prime Minister Imran Khan's party, criticized the government immediately after the attacks on Iran. The opposition stated that the decision to join the Gaza Peace Board was taken behind closed doors, without consultation with parliament and without public debate.
There were also reactions from diplomatic figures. Former Pakistani ambassador to the UN and the US, Maliha Lodhi, wrote on the X network that Pakistan should be removed from the board, arguing that it was created and is run by an administration that has carried out attacks on several countries and that, according to her, bears responsibility for Israel's actions in Gaza.
Last month, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attended the inaugural meeting of the Gaza board and called Trump a “man of peace.” The government’s decision to join the mechanism has sparked strong political backlash and street protests, as regional tensions continue to rise.
