Iran elects new Supreme Leader after Ali Khamenei's assassination
Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, an Iranian cleric and politician, and the eldest son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been elected as the new Supreme Leader of Iran, according to a report by the Iran International media outlet .
According to the same source, his selection was made under pressure from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), at a time when the country is in the midst of an escalating conflict with the United States and Israel.
Israel today attacked the headquarters of Iran's Assembly of Experts, the institution responsible for selecting the country's supreme leader. But members were not there and they gathered online, choosing the new leader.
According to Iran's constitution, the selection of the Supreme Leader is the prerogative of the Assembly of Experts, the same body that elected Ali Khamenei to the post in 1989. The Assembly is made up of 88 clerics, who are formally elected by popular vote every eight years. However, candidacies are only allowed for clerics who are considered fully loyal to the Islamic Republic's system.
For this reason, most of the current members of the Assembly are known for their conservative stances and close to the current leadership line.
The constitution stipulates that the election of a new leader should take place as soon as possible. However, immediately convening the full Assembly may be difficult in the face of a tense security situation, as the country faces attacks and military threats.
Meanwhile, the Iranian Constitution provides that, during the interim period, the powers of the Supreme Leader are exercised by a tripartite body composed of the President of the Republic, the head of the judiciary, and a cleric member of the Guardian Council. This mechanism aims to guarantee institutional continuity until the formal confirmation of the new supreme leader.
