Alexei Navalny's last days may help to understand what happened to the anti-Putin dissident before he died. It is at least the hope of those who in these hours try to reconstruct a truth that seems denied, with a body that cannot be found. What is known, as confirmed by his family, is that despite the very severe conditions of detention, he has not been ill. He had been in a maximum isolation cell until 48 hours before his death. They had sent him there for the 27th time since he was arrested. A total of 295 days out of the 1126 he spent in Putin's prisons.
But the punishment cell in Kharp's prison was the worst he had ever been through.
The maximum isolation of the "Polar Wolf" - IK3, the prison beyond the Arctic Circle, the most northerly, is more severe, rebuilt in '61 on the ruins of Stalin's camp. They call him the "Polar Wolf" around the frozen tundra, on the high side of the Arctic Urals. The nearby town of Kharp is home only to the families of people who work at the prison, guards and staff. On February 1, Navalny returned to the "disciplinary cell". A frozen, damp, lightless niche that is never found in winter anyway. On Wednesday February 14 he returns to a "normal" cell after fifteen days of solitary confinement. Although the ordeal must have been terrible, he seems to be coping quite well.
Navalny's last appearance was on February 15, a day after his confinement ended, in a remote hearing with Khovrov's court.
Navalny appeared smiling. Talked to the judge on video. The hearing concerned a complaint Navalny filed against the conditions of detention at Penal Colony No. 6 in the Vladimir region, where he was imprisoned before arriving in Siberia.
Navalny jokes with the judge: he asks him if he can pass on a part of his good salary, because he "is a little dry". He laughs, the judge laughs, the guard laughs. Mention is made of his poor health in prison earlier (he had also suffered severe stomach pains, suggesting a new poisoning attempt), but no mention of health problems at the time. These are the last images of Navalny alive.
The video goes off, he goes back to his cell and dies after 24 hours.
The first official communication, about which there are already many doubts, is the time of Navalny's death: 14:00 and 17:00. According to the prison, the only thing that has happened before is normal, "walks" given to prisoners. But the times do not seem to match. According to the accounts of activists who have passed through IK3, such as Maria Pevchikh or Igor Kalyapin, the alarm clock is set every day between at 5 and 6 a.m. and curfew, handcuffed or handcuffed, is at half past six. Outside temperatures drop to minus 40 degrees. The walk is often in a frozen yard that is narrower that the cell, from which the prisoner can barely see the sky Sometimes, the hour of fresh air can turn into an hour of torture.
"During the winter they gather in a larger yard several prisoners dressed only in light clothes, without coats, scarves, or gloves, and are forced to stand still, without even being able to put their hands in their pockets or they rub them, they have to stay like that, naked, in the cold for thirty or forty minutes. If they move, they wash them with cold water," wrote activist Olga Romanova, reporting the testimony of a prisoner.
But what is wrong is the time of death which does not correspond to the hours of free time allowed in prison.
