Christo Grozev, was the Bulgarian journalist who discovered the poisoning of Alexey Navalny in 2020 and who is part of the "most wanted" list of the Russian President, Valdimir Putin.
In an interview with CNN, he discusses his theories about what led to the Russian opposition activist's sudden death.
CNN reporter: I'm sorry for your loss, he was a good friend, a man you worked closely with to expose Russian corruption together. I know you're trying to figure out what happened, what do you know at this point?
Grozev: Let's start with the obvious, I think what President Biden said today was correct, about his death this morning, all the evidence leads us to what is the truth, that it was Putin who caused the death, because there are only two extreme hypotheses here, the most obvious one is that his death came as a result of three years of torture, slow murder, due to illegal imprisonment and solitary confinement that is unprecedented in the Russian prison system. In the past two years alone, he spent over 300 days in solitary confinement when Russian law considers two weeks' solitary confinement a violation, but Putin's regime found ways to keep him in solitary confinement longer and longer, denying him health care, food balanced, even compared to prison standards, he only got 1 loaf of bread a month, and most of the time he only got a few hoes. But, this is the most innocent hypothesis, while the most likely hypothesis is that unfortunately he was poisoned for the second time. Now we don't have proof yet, what we have now is circumstantial evidence. For example, if it were true that he collapsed due to a stroke this morning while walking in the prison yard, where is the proof of that, where are the images? All prisons in Russia have cameras and 18 hours have passed since the incident and we have seen nothing. Once again this is only circumstantial but all the evidence leads to the conclusion that he was killed today on purpose. We will investigate and I am sure we will find it. I repeat, the burden of proof is now with the Kremlin, because a few years ago we proved that they tried to kill him with chemical weapons.
