Ukrainian and American officials are expected to meet in Saudi Arabia to discuss a possible partial ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, part of a diplomatic push by US President Donald Trump to end the three-year war.
The meeting will precede talks between the American and Russian delegations which are scheduled for Monday.
And then a series of talks held in Saudi Arabia, first between the US and Russia, and then between the US and Ukraine, when Kiev accepted a 30-day ceasefire proposal.
The Ukrainian delegation at Sunday's meeting will be led by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier that this fact would allow Kiev to act in a "very quick and very substantial" way.
However, Ukrainian officials have said they still see the meeting in Riyadh as purely technical.
Heorhii Tykhyi, the Foreign Ministry spokesman, said that the Ukrainian and American sides should “clarify the modalities, the nuances of the various possible ceasefire regimes, how to monitor them, how to control them, in general, what is included in their scope.”
It is reported that last Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to Trump's proposal that Russia and Ukraine stop attacks on each other's energy infrastructure for 30 days and ordered the Russian military to stop them.
But despite all the diplomatic activity, Russia and Ukraine have both reported ongoing attacks, while Russian forces have also continued to slowly advance into eastern Ukraine, a region that Moscow claims to have annexed.
