Ukraine's military has confirmed that one of its F-16 fighter jets, which it received from its Western partners, crashed on August 26.
The plane went missing while repelling Russian attacks, the Ukrainian military said, adding that the pilot died as a result of the crash.
The Wall Street Journal previously reported that the F-16 was destroyed in the Aug. 26 crash. An unnamed US official told the paper that although the incident occurred during a major Russian strike in Ukraine, initial reports indicated that the F16 was not downed by enemy fire.
The Wall Street Journal said the plane likely crashed as a result of pilot error. The downing of the fighter jet happened a few weeks after the first F16s arrived in Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kiev used the jets in combat for the first time to shoot down Russian missiles during this week's attacks.
On Thursday, the Netherlands gave Ukraine permission to use F-16 fighter jets on Russian territory, which it donated some time ago. The Netherlands has donated 24 F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine.
The F16s, built by Lochheed Martin, have been a favorite of Ukraine's fighters because of their destructive power. This aircraft can carry bombs, shells and missiles.
Ukrainian pilots have been trained how to use the F16 by Western partners for months.
