Russia has launched another wave of heavy attacks on Ukrainian cities ahead of the NATO summit to be held on July 7-8. Shortly after midnight on Monday, air defenses were on alert in almost all regions of the country and powerful explosions were reported in Kiev. Authorities and media reported multiple explosions in the capital and its suburbs.

Several buildings were damaged, at least ten people were killed across the country and dozens more were injured. Thousands of people fled the attacks in metro stations.

President Volodymyr Zelensky warned in a video message Tuesday evening that Russian President Vladimir Putin is likely to order another wave of heavy air strikes before the start of the NATO summit in Turkey on Tuesday.

He cited information from Ukrainian intelligence.

"This is typical for Putin, right after American Independence Day (July 4) and before the NATO summit in Ankara," Zelensky said.

Meanwhile, Poland, a member of NATO and the EU, temporarily scrambled fighter jets as a precautionary measure.

At least 15 residential buildings were damaged or destroyed in the attack, including a nine-story block in the historic Podilskyi district, emergency services said.

Rescuers used a ladder truck to reach people trapped on the upper floors of that building, which was mostly destroyed from the fifth level, they said.

Klitschko said two people had died in the eastern Darnytskyi neighborhood, where fragments hit a 25-story building, and rescue teams were working to free residents trapped on the upper floors.

He also said a fire had broken out in a 30-story building in Darnytskyi, where residents were being evacuated.
