Russia plans to produce up to 120,000 glide bombs this year, said General Vadym Skibitskyi, deputy director of Ukraine's defense intelligence agency. In an interview, the senior official told Reuters that this included 500 of a new, longer-range version.
Russian defense plants are said to be operating 24 hours a day to meet the target, a huge increase compared to previous figures.
What are glide bombs?
The highly destructive, yet inexpensive, bombs have become a significant part of Russia's aerial bombardment of Ukraine during its war.
Air-launched weapons are often Soviet-era munitions equipped with wings and navigation systems. Because of their simplicity, they often cannot be blocked or stopped by what is traditionally called "electronic warfare."
They are cheaper than missiles, but, despite weighing between 500kg and 3,000kg, can be dropped beyond the range of Ukraine's air defenses. The glide bombs played a key role in the capture of the ruined city of Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine.
