Ukrainian special forces struck a Russian FSB headquarters in the occupied Kherson region, killing and wounding about 100 Russian soldiers, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. A Russian Pantsir-S1 air defense system was also destroyed in the operation, as Ukraine continues attacks on Russian military targets in the occupied territories.
The "Alpha" special unit of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has attacked the headquarters of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) in the occupied Kherson region, causing heavy losses in the ranks of Russian forces.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, about 100 Russian soldiers were killed or wounded during the operation.
Zelensky made the news public in a statement and released footage from the operation. He said the strike hit an FSB operations center in the occupied territory and also destroyed a Russian Pantsir-S1 air defense system, worth up to $20 million.
The Ukrainian president did not provide details about the exact timing of the operation or the weapons used, but stressed that Ukraine will continue strikes against Russian military targets.
"The Russians must understand that this war must end. Ukrainian medium- and long-range strikes will continue to yield results," Zelensky declared.
The Kherson region has been one of the most important fronts of the war since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February 2022. Russian forces occupied most of the region in the first months of the war, including the city of Kherson. However, the Ukrainian army regained control of the city in November 2022 after a large-scale counteroffensive.
Despite this, areas east of the Dnipro River remain under Russian control. Ukraine has intensified attacks on Russian military bases, weapons depots and logistics points in these territories in recent months, with the aim of weakening Moscow's operational capability.
The attack in Kherson comes at a time when Ukraine is expanding its use of drones and long-range weapons to strike strategic Russian targets, not only in occupied territories but also inside Russian territory. In early May, Ukrainian drones struck another FSB facility in Russian-occupied Crimea.
The Pantsir-S1 system, which was reported destroyed during the operation, is considered one of the Russian military's main air defense tools for defense against missiles and drones.
