Appeal decision changes the political scene in France, Le Pen can run in 2027...
Marine Le Pen

The appeal reduced the sentence for incompatibility with public office, allowing her to run in 2027, but the leader of the National Rally must wear an electronic bracelet for one year.

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen could run in France's presidential election in the spring of 2027 after a Paris appeals court reduced her sentence for holding public office. However, the ruling comes with a condition that could affect her political future: she must wear an electronic bracelet for a year.

The court confirmed Le Pen's guilt for embezzlement of European Parliament funds, but reduced the sentence imposed in the first instance. The ban on running for public office was reduced to 45 months, of which 30 months were suspended, leaving only 15 months in force. Since this period is considered already served, from a legal point of view she can take part in the presidential race in 2027.

However, the court also sentenced her to three years in prison, two of which are suspended, and one year of house arrest with monitoring via an electronic bracelet. Le Pen herself has previously stated that she does not want to run a presidential campaign if she is forced to wear this device, arguing that a presidential candidate should have complete freedom of movement.

The leader of the National Rally (Rassemblement National) is expected to clarify her position in a television interview on Tuesday evening. If she decides to withdraw from the race, the party's most likely candidate remains Jordan Bardella, the 30-year-old president of the RN.

Le Pen and ten co-defendants were found guilty of illegally using European Parliament funds intended for parliamentary assistants who, according to the court, were actually working for the party. In addition to the criminal penalties, the convicts will have to compensate the European Parliament for around 2 million euros, pay 150 thousand euros in moral damages and court costs. Le Pen was also fined 100 thousand euros.
