Several airports in Italy, especially in the north of the country, are facing fuel shortages for aircraft, forcing airport authorities to impose supply restrictions.
According to Corriere della Sera, Bologna airport has decided to limit fuel supplies after one of its main suppliers, Air BP, did not receive the planned amount of fuel due to the delay of a ship carrying jet fuel.
For this reason, several NOTAMs (official notices to aviation operators) are expected to be published, while in Bologna the restrictions are expected to be in effect until July 23, although this date may change.
Despite the situation, flights at Bologna airport continue to operate normally.
Under the new measures, planes with flights lasting less than three hours will not be able to carry more than 2,000 liters of fuel, an amount that provides about two hours of autonomy. As a result, some planes will have to take on more fuel at the airport they depart from.
The restrictions do not affect state and medical flights.
Sources say that the other fuel supplier at Bologna airport, Carboil, is not facing any problems.
According to Corriere della Sera, after the Gulf crisis, Italy had managed to avoid the risk of fuel shortages thanks to increased domestic production and imports from countries such as the United States and Nigeria. However, delays in Air BP supplies have created temporary difficulties at some of the country's airports.
