BBC Verify has examined several US military buildups this year, including deployments in the Caribbean ahead of the capture of former President Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela. More recently, attention has focused on the US military presence near Iran.

In naval terms, these deployments present similarities. In both cases, the US has committed an aircraft carrier strike group, consisting of an aircraft carrier accompanied by three destroyers, as well as several destroyers operating independently.

However, according to BBC Verify analysis, these deployments take place in different strategic contexts.

Venezuela and Iran, how does the US military's capacity stand against them?

Venezuela is located relatively close to the continental United States and near a large U.S. military base in Puerto Rico. The Venezuelan military is generally considered less sophisticated and has limited defensive or counter-offensive capabilities.

Iran possesses more advanced military capabilities and can strike US bases over a wide geographical area. In the region, the US relies on agreements with allies such as Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan and Israel to conduct its operations.

Some of these allies have expressed concern about the possibility of direct retaliation from Iran, a factor that, according to assessments, could limit US operational options in the region.

BBC Verify's analysis highlights that, while the naval composition of the forces is comparable, the strategic environment and associated risks differ significantly between the two situations.
