US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that reaching an agreement with Iran remains challenging due to the ideological nature of the leadership in Tehran, but stressed that the United States will continue diplomatic efforts.
"Achieving a deal with Iran is not easy," Rubio said during a joint press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban after high-level meetings in Budapest. Talks between the two delegations focused on strategic cooperation, energy and geopolitical coordination.
Commenting on the decision-making structure in Tehran, Rubio said: "Iran is governed by radical Shiite clerics who make political decisions based on pure theology."
However, he confirmed that Washington is willing to continue diplomatic engagement.
"We've always said it's difficult, but we're going to try. That's what President Donald Trump is trying to do ," he declared.
Rubio stressed that negotiations will take place through official channels and not publicly.
"Of course I will not negotiate with Iran here before the conference and on stage. Our negotiators are going there now. They will have meetings. We will see what happens," he said.
In conclusion, the US Secretary of State added: "The President always prefers peaceful outcomes and negotiated outcomes over different things. I think there is an opportunity here to diplomatically reach an agreement that addresses the things that we are concerned about."
