Moldova's ruling pro-European party was leading in key parliamentary elections, with 70% of ballots counted.
The Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), which is struggling to hold onto its parliamentary majority, received 44% of the vote compared to 28% for the Russian-leaning Patriotic Bloc, Reuters reported.

Retaining a majority in the 101-seat chamber would allow PAS to continue pushing forward its goal of joining the EU by 2030.
If it fails, it will have to try to form a coalition with smaller parties. The Patriotic Bloc aims to gain power and move the nation away from closer ties with Brussels and the EU.
