Russia has said it will conduct a military exercise that will include training for the use of a tactical nuclear weapon, The Guardian reported on Monday.
According to the Kremlin, this nuclear weapons drill comes after Western threats to send military troops to Ukraine.
The Russian Ministry of Defense has said that the exercise was ordered by President Vladimir Putin, adding that missile formations in the southern military district and naval forces will also take part.
"During the exercise, a number of measures will be taken to practice the issue of using non-strategic nuclear weapons. The exercise aims to ensure Russia's territorial integrity and sovereignty in response to provocative statements and threats by some Western officials against the Russian Federation , the Kremlin said in a statement.
Ukrainian authorities called the Russian drill warning "nuclear blackmail".
"We see nothing new here, except the effect of information and statements. Nuclear blackmail is a constant practice of the Putin regime," said Andriy Yusov, Minister of Defense of Ukraine.
