14 airport employees on the island of Tenerife have been arrested on suspicion of stealing items worth 2 million euros from passengers' luggage. The police action started after repeated complaints from passengers.
Among the items stolen from passengers of various nationalities were 29 luxury watches, 22 state-of-the-art smartphones and 120 pieces of jewelry.
It is suspected that the arrested have sold the stolen items in various shops. Another 20 workers at the airport and 27 jewelry stores on the island are also under surveillance by authorities.
Foreign media write that the thefts occurred while the suitcases were being placed in the trunk of the plane and the employees removed the valuables by hiding them in the pockets of their clothes or in their lockers at the airport. Tenerife is the seventh Spanish airport with the highest number of passengers reported to exceed 10 million people per year.
