Israel's ambassador to the United Nations Gilad Erdan has torn up "a copy of the UN charter" as the general assembly votes on whether to support a Palestinian bid to become full members of the United Nations.
Standing in front of the assembly in New York, Erdan held a small shredder and placed three pieces of paper on which were written the words "charter of the United Nations".
He was heard saying: "You're tearing up the UN card... Shame on you." His actions came moments before the 193-member general body approved the resolution, granting Palestine "new rights and privileges".
The UN recommended that the Security Council favorably reconsider Palestine's request for full membership.
The UN often provides memorable performative moments where members seek to capture attention.
