Four thousand soldiers and police participated today in an operation in the prison where Fito, the leader of Ecuador's most powerful gang, is being held. The slain presidential candidate, Fernando Villavicencio, had accused him of threatening him, police authorities said.

Security forces raided Guayaquil prison number 8, where Jose Adolfo Macias, or Fito, the leader of the "Los Choneros" gang, has been imprisoned since 2011.

In a photo published by the authorities, Fito appears with his hands on his head. In another photo, he is seen lying on the ground in his underwear with dozens of other prisoners.

His name is on the front pages of Ecuadorian newspapers after the assassination on August 10, 2023, of Fernando Villavicencio, 59, the centrist presidential candidate who came second in the polls for the presidential election scheduled for August 20.

Last week, Fernando Villavicencio said the gang leader, who is serving a 34-year sentence for murder and drug trafficking, had threatened to kill him.

Six Colombians have been arrested in Villavicencio's murder, while a seventh was killed during a shootout with his bodyguards. Authorities have not yet said who hired and paid the killers

Fernando Villavicencio was buried today in a private ceremony. Prisons have become the center of drug trafficking operations in Ecuador.

More than 430 inmates have died a violent death since 2021, dozens of them dismembered and burned amid disputes between rival gangs.
