Mexico has been plunged into great chaos this Sunday, following the official confirmation of the killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho", the powerful leader of the Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) cartel, one of the most violent and powerful criminal organizations in the world.
According to the Mexican Ministry of Defense (SEDENA), El Mencho was seriously injured during a military operation in the municipality of Tapalpa in the state of Jalisco (about 130 km south of Guadalajara) and died while being airlifted to Mexico City for medical treatment. The operation led to the deaths of four CJNG members at the scene, the arrest of two others, and the seizure of heavy weapons, marking the biggest blow against drug trafficking in decades.
Immediately after the news spread, the cartel's reaction was swift and brutal: roadblocks with burned vehicles, burning trucks and buses, clashes with security forces, and isolated attacks were recorded in states such as Jalisco, Guanajuato, Colima, Michoacán, Tamaulipas, Aguascalientes, and others.

The situation became particularly tense at Guadalajara International Airport, where shots were reported near the facility, panic, evacuation of terminals, and temporary suspension of flights, and at Puerto Vallarta Airport, where passengers left the waiting rooms for fear of escalation.
Mexican authorities have activated a code red in Jalisco, increased security measures in strategic areas and canceled classes for Monday.
The US Embassy issued urgent warnings for American citizens: "shelter-in-place" in affected areas, avoidance of non-essential travel, and high alert.
The killing could reshape the cartels, but experts warn of a potential wave of violence from the fragmentation of the CJNG. President Claudia Sheinbaum and the Trump administration have called it a “major development” in the fight against fentanyl.
